Who Takes It?
Each year, about 675,000 prospective graduate and business school applicants from 230 countries/regions take the test. Applicants come from varying educational and cultural backgrounds and the GRE revised General Test provides the only common measure for comparing candidates' qualifications.

When and Where Do People Take It?
The GRE revised General Test is available at about 700 test centers in more than 160 countries. Launch of the GRE® revised General Test Marks Biggest Change in 60 Years

For the 700,000 hopeful students who take a GRE® test each year, August 1 marks the dawn of a new and brighter era — the launch of the GRE® revised General Test. The most significant change in the GRE Program’s 60-year history, the new test has already earned praise from the graduate and business school community and, in its first day, received rave reviews from test takers worldwide.
"It is a great improvement over the old version; it is what students want," said Nakul Vyas, a GRE test taker in Mumbai, India. "Moving back and forth is a pleasure and gives you flexibility."
Lindsey Todd, a GRE test taker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, adds, "Being able to flag questions and go back to them in the review section was really, really cool because I was able to go back and work on the questions that I wasn’t sure about. And, I used the on-screen calculator a lot—it was really helpful."
With new questions, a new score scale and a new test-taker friendly design, the GRE revised General Test offers applicants a friendlier, more technically advanced test that is designed to provide graduate and business schools with even more reliable results. Australia Approves TOEFL® Test Scores for Student Visas

Princeton, N.J. (May 19, 2011) —Students from around the world who wish to study in Australia can now use their TOEFL® test scores as part of their visa application as announced by Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

"I am very pleased the TOEFL test has been chosen as one of the new English test providers and I am confident they will provide a valuable service to student visa applicants," said the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.
This announcement has significant meaning for large numbers of international students fromAssessment Level 3 and 4 countries, including China, India, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey and the Philippines, who are interested in studying in Australia. International students now have the opportunity to use the TOEFL test to demonstrate their English language proficiency, satisfying the required language component of the visa application process.
"Nearly every university and college in Australia already accepts TOEFL scores for admission purposes. "English Conquers All"

This is an article about how English is considered to be the most powerful language in the world. Find out why by reading Amanda's Katz article below:

If you can read this sentence, you are either a native English speaker or one of the billion people — and this second group is three times the size of the first — who learned the language later in life. Though English lags behind Mandarin and Spanish in numbers of native speakers, it increasingly serves as lingua franca in business, diplomacy, science, and technology. Given the reach of the Internet and American cultural exports, its influence seems all but unstoppable. In “Globish,’’ British author and editor Robert McCrum sets out, first, to summarize the history of (as the subtitle states) “how the English language became the world’s language.” He describes his story as “the suspenseful narrative of a people and their successive empires coming out of nowhere to create a culture that — against the odds — has achieved lasting global consequence.”

So far, so good. But McCrum has a second, more dubious goal: to rebrand English as “Globish.” Globish, to McCrum, is gloriously “contagious, adaptable, populist and subversive,” free of its colonial and imperial past, and able to unite us all without harm to existing cultures. If you believe that last bit, there’s a bridge I’d like to sell you — in, as the Lanape people once termed it, Mannahatta.
McCrum, best known as coauthor of the book and PBS series “The Story of English,’’ begins at the beginning: with the successive Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, and Norman invasions of the future England. These invaders gradually built a language that, by the 16th century, developed a kind of hybrid vigor. To a sturdy Germanic grammar and domestic vocabulary, it added Latin and French terms to fill out the scientific, professional, and cultural registers. (McCrum provides neat examples of how, as a result, English contains synonyms such as go, depart and exit, respectively derived from Old English, French, and Latin.) McCrum nicely summarizes this complex history from its earliest roots to the introduction of the printing press and later to the dawn of the American empire. Flexible and expansive, backed by one and then two aggressive nations, English conquered and thrived.

McCrum is better on England, politically and factually, than America. A section on African diasporic influence is almost entirely about how white writers, from Marlowe to Twain to Joel Chandler Harris to Mailer, appropriated black speech. Until he reaches Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama (that archetypal Globish figure), there is almost nothing to suggest that black people had made their own major contributions to English. Elsewhere, he describes the Civil War as “a poignant struggle between an old and a new way of life” — a description more suitable to a Confederate History Month proclamation. Then there are plain errors: The Americanization of Paris in 1919 was signaled by Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas settling at 27, rue de Fleurus (real dates: 1903 and 1910, respectively); FDR was inaugurated in 1932 (correct year: 1933).

These gaffes and tone-deaf moments speak to the book’s central problem. McCrum’s enthusiasm for Globish is such that his book sometimes feels like a corporate history, full of platitudes and true-ish detail but with little attention to the downsides or bigger implications of the business. He does make the rare concession that “[t]hose who want to characterize Globish as a kind of benign virus . . . must also acknowledge its imperial and colonial past.” But he more often insists that it has “long ago [left] the imperial hang-up behind.” He fails to substantiate that claim and seems oblivious to the experience of those colonized or invaded by the English — in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, parts of Africa. He writes, for example: “Apart from the Aborigines, an estimated 300,000 in 1788, Australia was an apparently empty continent.” Much like Great Britain, which is today entirely uninhabited. Except for the Brits.
This blind boosterism extends into the present. Globish “will, for the most part, leave local languages unscathed,” he writes. To the contrary, some linguists project that half the world’s languages will disappear by 2100 — in large part because of encroachment by English.
By denying this, McCrum recuses himself from nearly all important questions about the English lingua franca. Access to the language is associated with prosperity and global connection — so what should we do about the trade-off with linguistic diversity? If most English speakers are nonnatives, who controls “proper” English? Will new languages splinter off, or, in constant global conversation, will we converge on a new idiom — a genuine Globish? What might we gain? What might we lose?

Since McCrum believes that everyone wins when you teach the world to sing in English (to paraphrase Coca-Cola’s classic soft-imperial slogan), “Globish’’ is stuck outside the debate. He dismisses doubters with a quotation from The Sunday Times: “to be born an English-speaker is to win one of the top prizes in life’s lottery. And this can be said without a hint of triumphalism, sexism, racism, without annoying anybody much except the French.”

I appreciate the prize, but I’m with the French. As linguist Claude Hagège writes, “Whatever argument we give, the death threat that weighs upon languages today takes the guise of English. And I wager that the wisest Anglophones would not, in fact, wish for a world with only one language.” English is a beautiful language, true. But every language represents a marvelous solution to the problem of putting our world into words. When one disappears, an irreplaceable cultural logic vanishes as well.

The first lesson in patience is learning to count your trials as joy. Have you had your first trials at learning English? What were they? For me, my first trial to learn a foreign language was speaking French in Quebec. Everyone spoke French, but me. It was so hard to understand them. I tried to talk, but my friend continued to stop me from speaking because of my inability. The lesson from it was to encourage even beginner speakers.

We cannot and do not guarantee our students that they will pass their English exams. However, most of our TOEFL and IELTS students got their targeted scores. To achieve getting a high score, we ask our students to cooperate with us by putting effort and time to the lessons. At the same time, we are committed in providing quality online english classes to help students prepare for English tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Do you offer Group Classes?

Yes, we are finally offering group classes. However, we leave it to the student to tag his friends along and form groups of 2,3, or 4. Our maximum number of students in a group is 4 and our minimum number of hours is 1.

Do you allow students to change teachers?

We only allow students to change teachers if the teacher fails to show up for the classes consecutively and when the teacher habitually fails to prepare for the classes. Or, when the teacher is always late in meeting his students online.

Do you provide the books and materials for the classes for free?
Yes, we provide the books and materials for the classes for free.

What happens if I fail to show up for a class?

The student should notify the teacher or the coordinator in advance if he would like to postpone or cancel his classes. However, if the student fails to do this, the classes are forfeited.
If the teacher fails to show up without prior notification, then the teacher is obligated to reschedule the class to make up for the missed class.

Group Classes

Group classes are classes that are made up of 2 or more students. Since this is an online setting, we are limiting the maximum number of students per class. Why? Because we would like to be able to give quality instruction and effective learning. Thus, the maximum number of students per class is four.

The group class is organized by the students themselves. For now, the student can tag his friends along and form a group of 2, 3, or 4. Once the student has been able to form his group, the representative of the group can fill out the free class form and the coordinator can assist the representative in setting up the trial class. Private Classes

Private classes are individualized online English classes. What does this mean? This means that there is one teacher and one student in a class. We offer this kind of class to all students. Upon sign up, the student has the freedom to choose between a private class and a group class.

Each one of us is individually different from others. There are some things that you need while others don’t need them. Individualized classes are effective for students who want efficient and focused lessons at any level. For the low-end this helps accelerate learning for some students; for the high-end students, this helps in focusing on individual learning tasks needed in business or personal goals. Students of this kind of class can gain benefits such as:

1. Focus of the teacher to the student is full and complete.

2. Lessons are designed specifically. Lessons are created based on the needs of the student. For instance, if the student would like to focus more on improving his spoken English skills then such lessons would be created by the teacher.

How It Works?

What the student needs: a messenger program, microphone/headset, speakers, and a reliable internet connection.

How does it work?

1. Click the Free Class banner on the upper right of this page. Then sign up for a free trial class.

2. The coordinator will contact the student by email or add the student’s Skype id.

3. The coordinator will setup the free trial class based on the student’s desired day and time. However, we also need to consider the teachers’ availability. We can meet halfway and work things out for both sides.

4. A confirmation email will be sent out about the trial class details – this includes the profile of the teacher.

5. The teacher will either meet the student to just assess his level and understand his needs OR he can immediately give a trial class. This is a case to case basis. Generally, the trial class runs from 15 minutes – 60 minutes.

6. After the trial class, the coordinator will contact the student for feedback. The student can also contact the coordinator too, to inform if he will continue and sign up with more classes.

7. If the student would like to sign up for more classes, then the coordinator will ask the student the following questions:

a. Preferred date to begin the classes

b. Preferred length of each class (30 or 60 minutes)

c. Preferred number of classes to sign up and pay for

d. Preferred way of payment (Paypal or Western Union)

e. Preferred days and hours per week

8. Classes will only begin after the payment has been made. We can reserve the days and hours for the student if we don’t have many students coming in. However, if there are many students signing up for the classes, then it is going to be first come, first serve basis.

Proofread
What do we do when we proofread? Proofreading requires an expert eye to examine a text for several errors such as: punctuation marks errors, spelling errors, typographical errors, and obvious unintended errors. Therefore, we can say that proofreading is about accuracy.

Copy Edit
Copyediting involves proofreading and examining the text for the consistency in style and errors in grammar. Sometimes, he needs to check the validity and credibility of the information written by the writer. Also, a copyeditor can clarify poor wording, only if the client asks him to do so. Thus, this takes more time than proofreading. If proofreading is about accuracy, copyediting is about quality.

Edit
Editing involves enhancing the flow of ideas and quality of writing. This includes rewriting sentences or even the whole paragraph to achieve better quality. According to Tamara Rice, the editor “ will bring any potential issues to the attention of the writer and/or publisher — whether it be a legal matter, a question of good taste, a point of confusion, etc. An editor will make sure every base has been covered.”

English Proficiency tests are used for many reasons to measure English communication skill. IELTS and TOEFL are the leading tests im immigration and education for foreign students. TOEFL

TOEFL means Test Of English as a Foreign Language. There are two kinds of TOEFL test – the TOEFL PBT and the TOEFL IBT. The TOEFL PBT is a paper based test while the TOEFL IBT is an internet based test. TOEFL IBT was first introduced in 2005 and has been popular ever since.

What is the purpose of TOEFL?

TOEFL exams are administered to measure the student’s ability to survive and cope in an English academic setting. According to ets.org, “It has been administered more than 20 million times since 1964, and is available in more than 180 countries. It is also the most accepted test in the world. More than 6,000 colleges, universities, and agencies in 110 countries accept TOEFL scores. That means that students have the flexibility to use their TOEFL test scores worldwide.” Thus, more doors of opportunities are opened for those who are able to pass the TOEFL

What’s in the TOEFL IBT?

According to TOEFL tips from ets.org, these are the new things about the TOEFL ibt:

It tests your Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking in academic settings

A speaking section with six tasks has been added. The test takers wear headphones and speak into a microphone, which is digitally recorded.

Institutions are advised not to consider valid a report older than two years, unless the user proves that he has worked to maintain his level.^[1] ^[2]
In 2007, IELTS tested over a million candidates in a single 12-month period for the first time ever, making it the world's most popular English language test for higher education and immigration.^[3]
In 2009, 1.4 million candidates took the IELTS test in over 130 countries.
